Gotta Love Elizabeth Kandrac!

Hallelujah! Elizabeth Kandrac is "taking on the district." Well, it's about time someone does. We finally have an educator on the school board who believes in checks and balances (unlike that other former Principal "what's her name" who enjoys going along to get along).

I had to laugh at Mr. Douglas' comments regarding Ms. Kandrac. Here's the recap: "I just think that she ought to resign and let someone who truly ....cares about the children - and the education in North Charleston - represent North Charleston." Was he implying he actually cared about the children and their education while HE was on the board? Well, that's a new one. What did he do for North Charleston all the billions of years he sat on the board? I guess we could say he contributed to more segregation and unequal education with the School of the Arts and Academic Magnet. We could also say he did a great job shaking the hands of high school graduates unable to read by "rubber stamping" all of those great policies he approved.

Speaking of policies, I had to laugh again when Mr. Gregg Meyers was quoted as saying the school "board's role isn't to monitor what's happening in classrooms...but to focus on guiding the district with policies and budget." You mean, like that literacy policy the board is working on? How ARE those policies coming, Mr. Meyers? Don't even get me started on that ridiculous Buist policy you came up with. Don't you get it?? You HAVE to know what is going on in the classroom to create policies. And clearly if we have illiterates in high school something is NOT happening IN THE CLASSROOM. I think what Mr. Meyers was really trying to say is he doesn't visit too many schools and he definitely doesn't take the time to observe teachers teaching. The man has to prioritize, right? How can we as taxpayers expect him to be a lawyer, visit schools, AND...fix that hair? C'mon. There's only so much time in the poor man's day. Have you seen that hair?

Personally, if I was Ms. Kandrac, I'd go live happily ever after with my new spouse and forget all about this crazy place. But she cares too much. That's her only problem. That and the fact that she actually takes her role on our school board seriously. Yeah, she's actually doing the job we elected her to do. Thanks, Ms. Kandrac. I wish you well, no matter what direction you choose.

Meyers and Douglas did a great job of making residency verification a joke, especially when the District 20 board exposed the Buist cheats years ago. Now Douglas is worried about where someone lives? Douglas cares about Douglas and that's it. He could of cared less about all those kids cheated out of Buist. He did this interview for one reason only. Because his girl Toya asked him too. That and his buddies at the NAACP. Personally I think the man just likes seeing his name in print. I heard the only reason he left the board is because of dirty laundry.

I was at a meeting for the new charter, Palmetto Academy, and Kandrac was there. She was very interested but never did anything crazy or outrageous. She truly seemed to be there to learn about the new charter and not to cause trouble.

Palmetto Academy sounds like a great option but there is another new option in SC... South Carolina Virtual Charter School. Virtual meaning online at home and Charter meaning public. You the parent are the "Learning Coach" with help from real teachers via online class rooms. There are field trips and social interactions so none of this worry my kid is not getting any social skills. The social interactions are POSITIVE and not negative (bullying, foul language, sex, drugs, etc). You don't have to be overly religous or live on a homestead. Many of us are in this school because of the bad experiences we have had at the hands of public schools across the state.

SCVCS has doubled it's enrollment in only two years. More and more people are seeing this as away to educate their children away from the atrocities of public schools. I could list them but that would take a long time.

Just a FyI to all parents who are at their wits end with schools in Charleston County

You obviously don't know Ms. Kandrac very well, I worked with her for 3 years and would never trust her within a mile of my child...do your research before you back someone up like her!

I've done my research. I wouldn't trust my child within ten miles of Nancy McGinley or anyone currently running the Charleston County public school system. Elizabeth Kandrac isn't threatening to do damage to anyone's education. Nancy McGinley, on the other hand, is in a position to do great harm, and has. The county's failure to track its students is one example. How else would so many high school students be unable to read any where near grade level? And she says she's at a loss to explain why 20% of the county's already high drop out rate is composed of students who CAN READ at or above grade level. She's failing students at both ends. Kandrac couldn't harm that many people if she tried. McGinley's getting paid to do it, too. If that wasn't bad enough, the school board gave her a bonus!

McGinley was happy about the 2500 waiting list for Buist. "...Nancy McGinley said the demand for Buist Academy has been strong..." How the H-E-double hockey sticks can you be happy about that many kids on a waiting list. She should be upset because parents are not fighting to put their children in other schools. Fix the other schools to perform at the same level.
